This Meal Matters

Matthew 26:26-28 New Living Translation… As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many”.
Introduction: How do people know that we Christians are serious about our faith? Reference Deuteronomy 6:8
Transition: It doesn’t matter if we call this meal the eucharist (to give thanks), the Lord’s supper (an evening meal), or communion (communal meal), because the only thing that matters is that we celebrate it in remembrance of Jesus.
Exposition: This meal matters and it explains itself…
-This meal matters because it highlights that Christian communities are caring. Reference Acts 2, Matthew 23:11
-This meal matters because it reminds us of the covenant relationship we have with God. Reference Exodus 12
-This meal matters because it offers forgiveness, which frees us from guilt and shame. Reference Hebrews 9:22
Conclusion: This meal not only feeds us and unites us, but it reminds us that sin is too heavy of a load and we don’t have to carry it anymore, because Jesus paid it all!
